The campsite was good in the sense that it had a lot of facilities. Coping with the heat was becoming an issue and we were advised to get up before sun up whilst the day was young and then rest up in the afternoon when the heat was at it's worst. So the plan was to get up at six o'clock and set off early. We lay on top of our sleeping bags at 9 pm and we were both off to sleep within minutes. I awoke with a start, gosh had we overslept? It was semilight due to a campsite security light not far off. Looking at my watch it was just six o'clock . I awoke Catherine who complained that it felt like the middle of the night. Then I got dressed and was soon outside the tent ready for the day. It was pitch dark no sign of a sunrise. I took a quick look at my watch and damn, I had held it upside down in the tent !!! It was not 6AM it was 12.30. I got back in the tent to let Catherine know she could have another five and a half hour kip.
We got up at six and were on the road by 7.30. The ride along the bay had been great by St Kilda beach but the Frankston bit was at the side of a three lane expressway with a wide cycle lane. At Mornington however we were back beside the beach and the views were fantastic.
We had a few stops on the way, looking out over the water and eventually we got to Sorento. The bay from Melbourne was nearly a complete circle and the hour long ferry would get us across the mouth of the bay. Only ten dollars each (£6.60) for the ride and no charge for bikes so we thought it was a bargain.
We got to Queenscliff which was a lovely old town with an old fort and two lighthouses. Then we travelled onwards to stay with Nicole and Luke and their three lovely children and JJ the dog who are today's warm showers hosts. Luke has lived in this area all his life and spent much of the evening annotating our map with valuable information.
Temperatures were lower than yesterday and the sea breeze here helped in the hot afternoon.
We are still having problems with the odometer on the bike but I have bent out the battery contact now which after five weeks of fiddling may have done the trick.
We passed through some familiar sounding places today and yesterday such as Rye, Sandringham, Chelsea and Brighton. Rye beach even has beach huts on it!
Reading this in the city arms with Roger and Denis. No problem with the heat here :-)
