Thursday 23rd January - Wellington to Picton through Queen Charlotte Sound

Today started early with a short cycle ride to the Interilander ferry terminal in Wellington ready to board the three and half hour cruise.  We boarded without any incidents and met and chatted with a number of other independent cyclists on similar routes.  The crossing was expected to be choppy in view of the windy weather conditions but to our surprise, it was relatively smooth and spectacularly beautiful when cruising through Queen Charlotte Sound.

Waiting at the terminal in the sunshine for the announcement to board

One of the glorious views from the ship

The sun was quite strong and in true British spirit, the adaption of the hankercheif came into play.

Nearing Picton

Messy hair day, again!

We arrived at Picton in fine spirit and as you can see, fine weather too.  It's a glorious small tourist town and we hope to stay two nights and have a full day exploring the local area.

While wandering around the park we came across these ladies on a knitting quest.  After chatting we understood they named themselves The Picton Kintting Bombers, helping the poorer children of New Zealand keep warm by providing knitted blankets.  We spoke with Val, the organiser, who is also a keen cyclist together with her husband and a member of the worldwide Warmshowers hosting group.  We agreed that on our return back to the North Island we would look them up and share cycling experiences.  Something to look forward to towards the close of our New Zealand cycle adventure.

  1. Wow, already in South Island! Time is flying! Today's photos are even more stunning - you look and sound like you're having a great time. Unsurprisingly it's still grey and drizzly here. Xx
